The Great Chinook Salmons
Are you wondering what you can
hook in the vast fishing grounds of Victoria BC? Well, one of the
richest species you can find here is the Chinook salmon- the largest
in its species. Some call it king salmon, spring salmon, Tyee salmon
or Quinnat. It is greenish blue in color, with red or bright violet
on its back, and head and shades of silver at its sides. Chinooks are
native to the North Pacific Ocean and freshwater rivers in the
western part of North America. Marine biologists say that these
salmons are migrating sea creatures. They stay at sea then move up to
rivers where there is high current to lay eggs. Anglers call them
king salmons because of their big size. The mature Chinook has an
average measurement of 24 to 36 inches but can reach 58. On the
average, a Chinook can weigh anywhere from 10 to 50 lbs. However,
they can reach a maximum weight of 130 lbs. In recent years, the
biggest catch so far on official record for sports fishing, is 97.25
lbs. or 44 kilograms in the Kenai River in Alaska. That’s huge!
However, the biggest
catch so far, this time for commercial purpose, has a weight of 126
lbs. or 57 kilograms during the latter part of the 70’s. Guess
where? It’s near Rivers Inlet, British Columbia. The Chinook is at
the top of the list of highly-prized big game fish among sporting
anglers. Well, salmons contain omega 3-fatty acids, which is good for
human nutrition. Do I have to say they taste good?
